DEBRIEFING

Parenting Resource 03 – Debriefing

Kids sometimes need help to talk openly about some of the hard stuff they are experiencing. In order for our kids to feel safe and ready to chat, we often have to talk about the not so important stuff first.

This may sometimes fell like we are wasting time,,, we assume we need to get to the important stuff right now!

But remember, when we chat about sport, music or other things our our kids are interested in, we are opening the door to building a trusting relationship with our children.

What are some topics your kids like to talk about when they are chatting to you? Knowing some popular topics in your house might help you to engage in a conversation when you suspect they might need to debrief about something.

How/when can you fins time to talk about trivial things with your kids – that is, the things that are interested in that many not seem important to you?

Sometimes, talking about a problem won’t make it go away. How best can you support your child in this situation?

“Kids won’t let you anywhere near their baggage, until they realise you are onside with them, and that you aren’t going to tease them or punish them.” .
